Lesson 76 – الدَّرْسُ السَّادِسُ والسَّبْعونَ معاني حروف الجر

The preposition (ka)– حرف الجر " كَـ "

·         The preposition (ka) has only one meaning in Arabic, which is the similitude between the preceding and the following noun. Consider the following examples:

Ali is as courageous as the lion

عَليٌّ كالأسَدِ فِي شَجَاعَتِهِ

Fatima is as beautiful as the moon

فاطِمَةُ كالْبَدْرِ فِي جَمالِها

The teacher’s sound is as strong as the thunder

صَوْتُ الْمُدَرِّسِ قَوِيٌّ كالرَّعْدِ

  • Therefore the preposition (ka) equals the Arabic word (مِثْل Mithl) meaning like. Consider the following two equivalent structures:
  • Sometimes we see a structure containing (كَ) and (مِثْل) together. In such case the preposition (ka) is augmented for the purpose of confirmation. E.g.:

Indeed, there is nothing like Him.

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ

·         More examples:

Indeed, there is no player like you

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِكَ لاعِبٌ

Indeed, there is no writer like him

لَيْسَ كَمِثلِه كاتِبٌ

This student is like my brother, indeed.

هذا الطَّالِبُ كَمِثْلِ أَخِي
