Lesson 76 – الدَّرْسُ السَّادِسُ والسَّبْعونَ

The meanings of the prepositions - معاني حروف الجر

The preposition (ilā)- حرف الجر " إِلَى "

  • The original meaning of (ilā) is the circumstantial English preposition (to) referring to the destination of place, time, action, or person. Consider the following examples:

I went to the mosque

ذَهَبْتُ إلى الْمَسْجِدِ

Time

I slept from midday to the afternoon

نِمْتُ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ إلى العَصْرِ

Person

I said this to all students

قُلْتُ هَذا الكلام إلى كُلِّ الطُّلابِ

Action

I have been working to the end of the project

ما زِلْتُ أَعْمَلُ إلى نِهايَةِ المَشْرُوعِ

Action

I stayed in Iraq till the war

مَكَثْتُ فِي الْعِراقِ إلى قِيام الحَرْبِ

·         The preposition (ilā) has other different meanings as (for) and (with) etc. Consider the following structures:

هَذا العَمَلُ أَفْضَلُ إِلَيَّ مِنْ غَيْرِهِ

For

Travelling to Mecca is more liked to me than to any other country

السَّفَرُ إلى مَكَّةَ أَحَبُّ إلى أَبِي مِنْ أَيِّ بَلَدٍ آخر

With

I talked much with (to) my friends

تَحَدَّثْتُ إلى أَصْدِقائِي كَثِيرًا
