Lesson 56 – الدَّرْسُ السَّادِسُ وَالْخَمْسُونَ
The sound masculine plural - جَمْعُ المُذَكَّرِ السَّالِمِ
Introduction - مُقَدِّمَةٌ
- This is lesson fifty six of our free Arabic language course. This Arabic course with images and audios will help you learn Arabic.
- In Arabic there are two types of plural – the sound plural and the broken plural. We have already covered the Arabic broken plural in an earlier lesson.
- In this lesson we will learn a new type of the plural noun, which is called the sound plural (also known as regular plural) In-Shaa’-Allaah (God willing). It is called (جَمْع المُذَكَّرِ السالمِ /ĵamξ al mudhakkar as-sālim) in Arabic.
- We will learn In-Shā’-Allâh (God willing), that this type of plural ends with /Wāw/ and /Nūn/ (ون /ūn/) or /Yā’/ and /Nūn/ (ين /īn/) which are added to its singular form. Have a look at the following examples:
Plural جَمْعٌ | Singular مُفْرَدٌ
English | Arabic | English | Arabic |
workers | /ξāmilūna/ /ξāmilīna/ | Worker | /ξāmilun/ |
Employees | /muađđhafūna/ /muađđhafīna/ | Employee | /muađđhafun/ |
- In Arabic, not all singular nouns are able to form the sound masculine plural, there are some conditions that have to be present in the singular noun to be able to form the sound plural. We will learn all these conditions in this lesson In-Shā’-Allâh (God willing), in the following table there are examples of them:
Example المِثالُ | Condition الشَّرْطُ
English | Arabic | English | Arabic |
Worker | /ξāmilun/ | Singular
Student | /ŧâlibun/ | Masculine
Studier
Understander | /dārisun/ /fāhimun/ | Adjective of an animate (living) person |
|
- We will also learn how the declension of the plural is made, i.e. when it is ended with /Wāw/ and /Nūn/ (ون /ūn/) and when it is ended with /Yā’/ and /Nūn/ (ين /īn/).
- As we learnt in the previous lesson of the dual (المثنَّى), we will learn the case in which we omit the final /Nūn/ from the masculine sound plural, i.e. the case of annexation (الإضافة /al iđâfah/), wherever the sound plural is in the first place of it, as annexing noun (مُضاف /muđâf). E.g.:
after annexation | before annexation
