The Style of Apology – أُسْلوب الاِعْتِذَار

  • The Arabic apology style consists of the expressions which someone can use to show that he is sorry about something that he has done or said (being so late, causing troubles etc.)
  • In Arabic, there are many structures to express apology. There are verbal affirmative structures as (أَعْتَذِرُ I apologize), a verbal imperative structure as (سامِحْنِي forgive me)verbal noun structures as (عَفْوًا - مَعْذِرَةً), and nominal sentences as (أنا آسِف I am sorry).

Sorry, my friend!

عَـفْوًا يا صَدِيقِي

ياسِر

What is the problem, Yasser?

ما الْمُشْكِلَةُ يا ياسِر؟

عَمَّار

I cannot come at seven

لَنْ أَسْتَطِيعَ الْحُضُورَ فِي السَّاعَةِ السَّابِعَةِ

ياسِر

No problem, my friend. When will you come?

لا مَشْكِلةَ يا صَدِيقِي، مَتَى سَتَحْضُرُ؟

عَمَّار

I will come at nine

سَأَحْضُرُ السَّاعَةَ التَّاسِعَةَ

ياسِر

No problem, I will wait for you at that time

لا مُشْكِلَة، سَأَنْتَظِرُكَ فِي هذا الْوَقْتِ.

عَمَّار

Sorry again, my friend

عَفْوًا ياصَدِيقِي مَرَّةً أُخْرَى.

ياسِر

No problem, my friend, good bye!

لا مشكلة يا صَدِيقِي...مَعَ السَّلامَة

I feel a strong pain in my stomach

أَشْعُرُ بِأَلَمٍ شَدِيدٍ فِي بَطْنِي

Right, I will accept your excuse, but you have to come tomorrow

حَسَنًا، سَأَقْبَلُ اِعْتِذَارَكَ، ولكن يَجِبُ أَنْ تَحْضُرَ غَدًا

God willing, thank you, peace be upon you!

أَعْتَذِرُ عَنْ حُضُورِ حَفْلِ زِفافِكَ؟

لِماذا؟ ماذا حَدَثَ

My father has suddenly fallen ill, and I have to be with him 

مَرِضَ والِدِي فَجْأَةً، وَعَلَيَّ أَنْ أَجْلِسَ مَعَهُ

My Allah cure him

Did your father asked you to do that?

وَهَلْ طَلَبَ أَبُوكَ مِنْكَ ذَلِكَ؟

No, but I would like that he forgives me for what was in the past

لا، وَلَكِنْ أُرِيدُ أَنْ يُسَامِحَنِي عَلى ما مَضَى
