Declension of the Five Verbs – إعْرابُ الأَفْعالِ الخَمْسَةِ
The Naŝb of the Five Verbs
- We are still in lesson thirty seven of our free Arabic language course. This Arabic course with images and audios will help you learn Arabic.
- We will now learn the Naŝb mark of the Arabic Five Verbs. We learnt before the Naŝb particles أنْ and لَنْ and how a sound verb فِعْل صَحِيح or a defective verb فِعْل مُعْتَلّ be in the Naŝb case with these particles. For example:
Verb | ||||
an yanām-a | an nakhruĵ-a | lan yantaŝir-a | lan yađhīξ-a | Transliteration |
to sleep | to get out | will not win | will not be lost | Meaning |
- What about the Naŝb case with the Five Verbs. Consider the following examples:
Translation | Examples |
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: " You will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love one another"
Allah (Exalted be He) says: "By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend (benevolently) out of what you love" | قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالى:"لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ" |
Muslims should propagate the sound teachings of Islam | يَجِبُ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَنْ يَنْشُروُا تَعالِيمَ الإسْلامِ الصَّحِيحَةَ. |
They should inform people of its truth
They should teach people its moderateness |
- Notice the following verbs that are stated in the above examples:
Verb | |||
tanāl-ū | tu'min-ū | tadkhul-ū | Transliteration |
attain | believe | enter | Meaning |
Verb | |||
tunfiq-ū | taħābb-ū | tu'min-ū | Transliteration |
spend | love one another | believe | Meaning |
- These verbs are from the Five Verbs. The Nūn نُون ["N" letter] is omitted because the verbs are in the Nasb نَصْب case. The Nasb particle here is the article حَتَّى (ħattā).
- The Nūn (ن) is also omitted from the following verbs, because the verbs come after the Nasb particle أَنْ
Verb
yuξallim-ū
yukhbir-ū
yanshur-ū
Transliteration
teach
inform
propagate
Meaning
- So we can say that the Naŝb mark of the Five Verbs is the omission of the Nūn ("ن" letter). Here are some Naŝb particles of the present verb:
