Introduction - مُقَدِّمَةٌ

  • This is lesson eighty five of our free Arabic language course. This Arabic course with images and audios will help you learn Arabic.
  • There are four Arabic verbs are specific to express praise and blame in superlative way (exaggeration). Following are the two verbs which are specific to the superlative praise:

English

Arabic

No.

What an excellent…!!

نِعْمَ

1

How lovely!!

حَبَّذا

2

  • And following are the two verbs which are specific to the superlative blame:

English

Arabic

No.

How bad..!!

بِئْسَ

1

Evil is ..!!

ساءَ

2

  • We can also use the negated form of (حَبَّذا) of praise, to make a structure of blame (لا حَبَّذا). Therefore there are three structures of blame as follows:

English

Arabic

No.

How bad..!!

بِئْسَ

1

Evil is ..!!

ساءَ

2

How bad..!!

لا حَبَّذا

3

  • Consider the following examples:

English

Arabic

What an excellent father is the father of Khalid!!

نِعْمَ الأَبُ أَبُو خَالِدٍ

How a bad father is the father of Khalid!!

بِئْسَ الأَبُ أَبُو خَالِدٍ

  • We notice from the above mentioned examples that the use of the two verbs (نِعْمَ - بِئْس) gives the meaning of praise or blame a certain exaggeration, i.e. the speaker in the first sentence expresses that the father of Khalid is the best father he has ever seen, while in the second sentence he is the worst father in his opinion.
  • Therefore we will learn in this lesson the special Arabic verbs of praise and blame, In-Shaa’-Allaah (God willing). We will also learn the rules of these verbs, with multiple examples, and how the declension of the sentences of these verbs is.
