The meanings of the prepositions - معاني حروف الجر

Introduction - مُقَدِّمَةٌ

  • This is lesson seventy six of our free Arabic language course. This Arabic course with images and audios will help you learn Arabic.
  • The Arabic prepositions have no exact meaning as words, rather they acquire meanings when acting upon the following noun directly. Therefore the meaning of the Arabic preposition appears in the structure.
  • There are many prepositions in Arabic (about 17 prepositions). Some of them are rarely used, and some others are only used in literary or ancient texts. Therefore we will study in detail the eight preposition which are the most commonly used in modern standard Arabic, and which are the most frequently mentioned in Qur’an and prophet’s traditions, In-Shaa’-Allaah (God willing).
  • The eight preposition which we will learn in this lesson are as follows:

عَنْ

مِنْ

عَلَى

إلَى

لِـ

كَـ

بِـ

فِي

  • As you may notice from the above mentioned table, the first and the second prepositions consist of three letters, in which the third is a long vowel (Alif maqŝūrah), while the third and the fourth consist of two letters, and end with sukūn, and the fifth preposition consists of two letters in which the second is long yaa’, and the last three prepositions consist of a single letter each.
  • In this lesson we will learn the meaning of these prepositions in the different structures, and in the following lesson (77) we will learn the types of the prepositions In-Shaa’-Allaah (God willing).
