Lesson 92 – الدَّرْسُ الثَّانِي وَالتِّسْعُونَ

Patterns of abstract verbs - أَوْزانُ الأفْعالِ المُجَرَّدَةِ

The abstract quadruple verb pattern – أَوْزانُ الفِعْلِ الرُّباعِيِّ الْمُجَرَّد

  • There is only one regular pattern for the Arabic quadruple verb FaƐlala YufaƐlilu فَعْلَلَ يُفَعْلِلُ.
  • We can divide the quadruple verb into two categories according to the meaning of the verbs as follows:

1-    Quadruple verbs indicating intangible meanings: Consider the following examples:

Pattern YufaƐlilu يفَعْلِلُ

بَعْثَرَ

لا تُبَعْثِرْ أَمْوالكَ

Don’t scatter your money.

دَحْرَجَ

يُدَحْرِجُ

Roll over

مَنْ يُدَحْرِجِ الْحَجَرَ يَنَلِ الْجائِزَةَ

Whoever rolls over that stone, will win a prize.

عَرْبَدَ

يُعَرْبِدُ

Revel

لا تُعَرْبِدْ فِي الشَّوارعِ فَتُحْبَسْ

Don’t revel in public street, otherwise the police may prison you.

2-    Quadruple verbs indicating tangible objects: Consider the following examples:
