Introduction to Morphology - مُقَدِّمةٌ لِعِلْمِ الصَّرْفِ

Morphology studies patterns of verb دِرَاسَةُ عِلْمُ الصَّرْفِ لِلْأَفْعَالِ

  • One of the topics of Arabic Morphology is the patterns of verb. This study helps us discovering the root of the verb and distinguishing its original letters from those augmented ones. Consider the following examples:

Arabic Verb

English meaning



Arabic sentence

English translation


He went out


خَرَجَ مُحَمَّدٌ مِنَ الْفَصْلِ.

Muhammad went out from the class.


He took out


أَخْرَجَ الطَّالِبُ كِتابَهُ.

The student took his book out.


He took out


خَرَّجْتُ السَّيَّارَةَ بِصُعُوبَةٍ.

I’ve took out the car hardly.


He was graduated


تَخَرَّجَ طارِقٌ فِي جامِعَةِ الْقاهِرَةِ.

Tarek was graduated from Cairo university.




تَخارَجَ الشَّرِيكانِ مِن التِّجارةِ.

The two partners have dissolved the company.




اِسْتَخْرَجَ الْمُهَنْدِسُونَ الْبِتْرُولَ.

The engineers extract petrol.

  • All the above mentioned verbs belong to the same root (خ ر ج). Patterns are formed from the original letters of the root verb plus some augmented letters in order to give a new meaning.
  • We will study the meanings of the verb patterns in detail in lesson 93 and 94.
