Lesson 53 – الدَّرْسُ الثَّالِثُ وَالْخَمْسُونَ

The Maqŝūr Noun  الاسـْمُ المَقْصُورُ

Dual and plural forms of the Maqŝūr noun - تَثْنِيَةُ الاسْمِ المَقْصُورِ وَجَمْعُه

·         The Maqŝūr noun [a noun ending with a long alif /-ā/] may be singular or plural. In the following we will learn how to make the dual and plural forms of the Maqŝūr noun. Study the following:

فَتَىً

/fatan/

This is a strong boy

هَذا فَتَىً قَويٌّ

هُدَى

/hudā/

This is Huda

هَذِهِ هُدَى

عَصَا

/ξaŝā/

my father has a strong stick

أَبِي عِنْدَهُ عَصَا قَوِيَّةٌ

مُسْتَشْفَى

/mustashfan/

This is a big hospital

هَذَا مُسْتَشْفَى كَبِيرٌ

مُصْطَفَى

/muŝŧafā/

This is Mustafa

هَذا مُصْطَفَى

مُرْتَضَى

/murtadha/

This is Murtada

هَذا مُرْتَضَى

مُسْتَشْفَياتٌ

/mustashfayātun/

هَذِه مُسْتَشْفَياتٌ كَبِيرةٌ

مُسْتَشْفَيانِ

هَذَانِ مُسْتَشْفَيانِ كَبِيران

مُصْطَفَوْنَ

/muŝŧafawna/

هَؤُلاءِ مُصْطَفَوْنَ

مُصْطَفَيانِ

مُرْتَضَوْنَ

/murtađawna/

If the Maqŝūr noun consists of three letters, the long alif "ا" will change into its origin, which is either "و" or "ي". Consider the following examples:

(one) stick
